Driver's Licenses
As soon as residency is established in the state of Arizona, the new resident must obtain an Arizona driver's license. NO GRACE PERIOD is granted. To obtain an Arizona driver's license, one must show proof of age and identity, pass a vision test, pass a written test and possibly pass a road test. License Plates
License plates are issued by the Maricopa County Auto License Plate Department: (602)247-4200, 4005 N. 51st Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona 85031. Fees depend on the make, model and year of the car. The previous registration card, license plates and the title or lien papers are required. Call (602)255-0072 for information on personalized license plates.

Emissions Testing
Every car built after 1966 must pass emissions testing before it can be registered. Call (602)470-4646 for Inspection Stations' locations.

Every car must be insured for bodily injury and property damage before it can be registered.

Vehicle License Tax
Arizona imposes a motor vehicle license tax in lieu of a personal property tax on automobiles. The initial tax base is 60 percent of the manufacturer's list price (excluding options) which is reduced thereafter by about 14 percent per year. The tax rate is $4 per $100 of assessed valuation. The minimum vehicle license tax is $10. Payments are due annually upon registration.
